A core group of poets met every Friday night at Yictove's poetry series in The Knitting Factory. We knew each other's work, each other's lives, had dinner after the reading most weeks. Then, the space was scheduled for renovation and the reading was ... over.
We started a mailing list and searched for an alternative place to gather. Jackie Sheeler and Maggie Balistreri were led to the Pink Pony by Pablo Rosenblueth, and found the space was both beautiful and available.
This reading kicked off on November 19, 1999 with an open mike.
In December of 2000, we were told that the beautiful back room at the Pink Pony would be closing at year-end, and the reading had to find another space. Thanks to Angelo Verga, on January 19, 2001 we moved to the beautiful Cornelia Street Café, having missed only two weeks of the series due to the change in venue.

6/29/07 marks the final reading in the Pink Pony West Series, as jackie retires (at least for a while) from hosting. as you can see from the history above, it's been a long and wonderful journey shared with many incredible writers and performers. the friday night series now becomes "Son of a Pony" with a rotating series of hosts and the same five-star open mike. please do visit www.corneliastreetcafe.com for the latest information on their spoken word events, which are held almost every night at 6pm. and keep on writing!
