BUY NOTHING DAY 11/28/03
THERE IS A MAGAZINE ABOUT SHOPPING
by Jack Foss
If we were still a hunter-gatherer society
I’d read a magazine about how to keep
my spear-point sharp or welcome tips
on where to find the best roots and berries
but why should I read one about shopping
as if shopping were a way of life or something
I do to define myself? If I were
a fisherman I’d care about how the fish
were running or what sort of bait
attracted them. If I had a higher calling—-say
poet—-I wouldn’t care where I bought my clothes.
I’d go for cast-offs, things from the Salvation
Army or the St. Vincent dePaul Society. I wasn’t
born to shop.
