LOUIS XVI AS HE RAN DOWN THE STREET
ON AUGUST 9, 1792

...louis loved time more than me...
letter of august 8, 1792, marie antoinette queen of france
to her mother maria teresa, queen of austria

I love an accurate clock like everyone else.
Why? A king has to be on time.
We were followed by a marching band.
They wanted my head. I fled into the palace thru the locked side door.
Maybe something that wasn't invented would have helped us escape
like a digital alarm clock, a wrist watch.
Anyway it's almost over now.

In my way I was very influenced by the surrealists
so I knew what to expect. It’s easier that way.
But I had bad advisor. Like early Robert Lowell they were all mixed up:
metaphysicians, miltonians, elizabetheans. All sycophants.
Now I need an obit and a grave
and someone just saw raccoons nosing garbage.
Didn't find much: just husks of our souls.

Is it possible I will die for the old regime?
What to wear? Hey it's high noon.
Here comes John Wayne.
Is this a trailer or is he here to save me?
